IBIRD REGIONAL APPS DISCONTINUED 2015
Please note the following regional iPhone apps are discontinued.
- iBird North
- iBird South
- iBird West
- iBird Midwest
Unfortunately the regional iBird apps were discontinued several years ago; they are no longer available in the app store and they are no longer updated. When these apps were discontinued they would still run on the then current iOS, but since Apple has switched to running exclusively 64-bit apps with the new iOS 11 release. Consequently these 32-bit regional apps are now no longer compatible with Apple devices running iOS 11. We apologize for the inconvenience.
What Can I Do?
If you are an original owner of a regional app and wish to continue with the iBird product line here are some options:
iBird Pro. The new version 11 of iBird Pro has a feature that lets you purchase databases for other countries at prices much lower than the individual apps for these countries. The default database for Pro is North America with 942 species covering all of North America, including Alaska, Canada and parts of Mexico. The app costs $14.99. Click here to see it in iTunes.
iBird Plus. Instead of covering a portion of North America, as the regional apps, iBird Plus covers all 942 species of North America as well as additional species of Hawaii. iBird Plus costs the same $9.99 the original regional apps. iBird Yard Plus. iBird Yard+ covers all backyard birds of North America as well as over 100 popular birds likely to be encountered (seabirds, hawks, ducks, etc.). This is our lowest priced app at only $2.99. Click here to see it in iTunes.
iBird Photo Sleuth. Take a photo of any bird or load a photo from your gallery and this app will identify what species it is EVEN IF THE PHOTO IS OF POOR QUALITY. The database includes 942 species of North America including Alaska, Canada and parts of Mexico. The app costs $4.99. Click here to see it in iTunes.
How Can I Know You'll Never Discontinue an App Again?
App developers can't guarantee that the product they develop will remain relevant forever. Information about birds is not static, and today with all the discoveries about classifications due to DNA studies, changes are happening much faster than in the past. There are also accelerated changes in the underlying technology that can render an app obsolete overnight. Think of the cars you've bought in your life. Where are they now? Did the manufacturer keep them running for you? Did they replace parts when they broke? No? So why do we think software should last forever? Do consumers think that because software is not made of atoms, like tires or radios, there is nothing in software to wear out, hence it should be free and updated forever? If that is your belief, let me be the first to tell you its wrong. Software takes a great deal of labor to keep up-to-date. It is incredibly complex and can be puzzling to understand even for the most brilliant developer. Yet at some point the sales of a software product can drop to were there is just not enough income for the publisher to keep it going. It can drop because of more competition, because the information goes out of date, because the the manufacture of the device makes a big change to the device (think Apple, Google, Amazon, etc.) or just because it was not a great idea to begin with.
When we publish an app we really have no idea if it will be super popular or a total dud. And thus we can't make any promise we will continue to update it. If you feel spending $5 to $15 on a field guide app that may not last for years is a bad investment, I recommend you stick with paper based books that you can hold in your hand. Your book won't magically update itself, and if the contents change you'll need to buy a new edition. But you won't have to worry about the app suddenly disappearing from your phone.

I certainly do not understand how revenue from purchasing apps is distributed, and do not expect to have updates at zero cost, but I do expect some consideration for customers that have purchased multiple versions of your software over the years, and recommended it to quite a few people. As I understand the latest emails, every user of Ultimate is now being treated as a new customer -- which seems unfair to say the least.
I fail to see why this is being blamed on Apple, and do not understand why a "code" could not be given to past users for a reduced price. This is done by many suppliers and retailers every day, so why not apply it to this situation?

It is very unfortunate that you are no longer supporting these applications. I loved using iBird Photo Sleuth to identify bird species as I often like to walk in the woods and photograph the birds I meet while walking. I hope now you can focus on current products and, for example, release, for example, an interactive mask for the Instagram camera that will have the same functionality as my favorite application. viplikes.net helps to increase the ammount of views.
